Prototype: The historic "Bavarian Zugspitzbahn" by AEG, comprising the valley locomotives and two coaches, stands as a testament to the rich heritage of mountain railways in Germany. Operated by the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG, this railway, alongside the Wendelsteinbahn, holds the distinction of being one of the oldest mountain rail routes in the country. The picturesque journey commences in Garmisch Partenkirchen and unfolds directly towards the majestic Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak.
Embarking from Garmisch Partenkirchen to Grainau, the initial leg of the route is covered by the valley railway. As the journey progresses, the terrain transforms into a challenging cogwheel railway, ascending towards the Zugspitze. Notably, the resilient valley locomotives, numbered 1 and 4, along with the 4-axle passenger car, continue to be in active service, preserving the charm and authenticity of this historical rail experience.
